FERGUS FALLS — A state grand jury has indicted a Fergus Falls man on first-degree premeditated murder for the death of his father in earlier this year. The indictment, filed Tuesday, Sept. 21, in Otter Tail County District Court, is in addition to a second-degree murder charge against 29-year-old Dustin Michael Defiel, who is accused of fatally shooting his father Ricardo Defiel on June 1. An initial appearance on the new charge is scheduled for Friday.
The Hollywood gossip machine set its sights on northern Minnesota on Thursday, amid reports that Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and their kids stopped at the International Falls airport just a day before the couple separated. Pitt, Jolie and their family flew into a Minnesota airport on Sept. 14 — and gossip website TMZ, citing unnamed sources, reported that the stop came after Pitt became verbally and physically abusive to his children while on the private flight from France to the U.S.
CROOKSTON, Minn. -- A 60-year-old Crookston woman faces felony charges after allegedly throwing a cup of coffee on a city police officer who was attempting to assist her at a mental health hospital. Joan Marie Helsene-Sydow has been charged with fourth-degree assault of a peace officer, a felony, and disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, in Polk County District Court.

ALEXANDRIA —Officials have identified the three people critically injured early Saturday when an air ambulance helicopter crashed near the edge of Lake Winona in Alexandria. The three crew members of the North Memorial Health Care helicopter were pilot Joshua Jones, 47, flight nurse Scott Scepaniak, 44, and flight paramedic Miles Weske, 34. All remain hospitalized at North Memorial Hospital in the Twin Cities, according to a release from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
FARMINGTON -- Farmington Elementary School was locked down while police were searching for an active shooter around 9:30 a.m. Monday. No officers with the Farmington Police Department were available for comment, but one officer on scene advised citizens to stay inside and away from the area.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Interstate 35W bridge will glow blue for 11 nights in honor of Jacob Wetterling. Gov. Mark Dayton directed the Minnesota Department of Transportation to illuminate the bridge over the Mississippi River with blue lights, representing child abuse prevention, beginning Thursday night, Sept. 15. The bridge lights will remain blue through the memorial service for Jacob on Sept. 25.
