SOUTH ST. PAUL -- Sen. Jim Metzen, a Democrat who represented South St. Paul for four decades, died Monday night, a Senate spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday morning. Metzen, who had been undergoing treatment for a return of lung cancer since last year, was known around the Capitol for his easy laugh and congenial attitude.
ST. PAUL — Philando Castile is one of a growing number of black Americans killed by police. The Washington Post reports that the 32-yearold St. Paul man was the 123rd black person to be shot and killed by American police this year. He is at least the 506th person to die in police shootings in 2016.
ST. PAUL—Online voters have picked a classic northwoods scene of a canoe tied to a dock near a pine tree on a lake as Minnesota's newest license plate. The new license plate will be available from Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services this fall as part of the ongoing celebration of the 125th anniversary of Minnesota state parks and trails. The cost will start at $60, including a $50 annual donation to the state's parks and trails fund.
RED WING - Goodhue Fire Chief Michael Kehren was killed during in a tractor trailer accident following the July 4 Firefighter’s Dance in Wanamingo. Kehren, 58, had been riding on one of two wagons being pulled by a tractor when he fell off of the tow bar between the wagons and was run over by the second wagon. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office, Wanamingo First Responders, Zumbrota Ambulance, Zumbrota police and Mayo One responded to the accident.

ST. PAUL — Traffic deaths in 2015 rose by 14 percent in the past year, state Department of Public Safety officials said Thursday. Fatalities reached 411 last year, according to a department press release, up from 361 in 2014. Seventy-four of those deaths were affected by distracted driving, the top contributing factor in lethal crashes.
A 36-year-old Deer River man charged with second-degree murder Tuesday in Itasca County is suspected of beheading a 20-year-old Hibbing man after first striking him with a baseball bat and stabbing him multiple times in the lungs with a machete, according to a criminal complaint. Joseph Christen Thoresen, of Grand Rapids, was arrested Sunday in connection to the death of David Alexander Haiman, 20, of Hibbing, according to the complaint.
BAXTER - Loon chicks are most often seen perched atop the backs of their parents in an effort to protect them from potential predators. Which is why when one loon chick found itself alone in the lawn near state Rep. Josh Heintzeman’s Baxter home, it drew some attention. After Heintzeman and his family found the baby loon, he called Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jim Guida to determine what he should do next.
DETROIT LAKES - A Park Rapids man is in the Becker County jail after allegedly assaulting a woman and then chasing around a man, who tried to intervene, around with a hatchet. Wayne Lee Patton, 48, is charged with three felonies - assault with a dangerous weapon and two domestic assault charges.
UPDATE: BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A missing 5-year-old girl who was missing after a fatal mobile home fire in Bemidji has been found alive, officials said Thursday. Brittany Rose Balcer was visiting the home on Tuesday night. No other information on her discovery was immediately available. A suspect is in custody, according to a release from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
