DULUTH, Minn.—A man was found dead near his submerged pickup truck south of Ashland on Monday and a man from Minnesota died after a tree fell on his camper in Sawyer County on Sunday after storms caused extensive flooding and washed-out roads in northwestern Wisconsin this weekend.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn.. — An arrest warrant has been issued for a minimum-security inmate who walked away from a community work assignment in Becker County. The Becker County Sheriff's Office said Ricardo Daniel Gomez, 41, of Willmar was reported absent from his assignment around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16. Gomez was being housed at the Becker County Minimum Security Annex in Detroit Lakes and was part of the Institution Community Work Crews.
BACKUS, Minn. -- The boater whose body was recovered from a Cass County lake Wednesday has been identified as Ronald Reinhart, 69, of Canton, Ga. The driver of the boat was also identified as James Bifulk, 67, of Maplewood, according to a news release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Reinhart’s body was recovered from Hay Lake, located in Ponto Lake Township northeast of Backus Wednesday afternoon, June 13, about a day after the sheriff’s office received a report of two people thrown from a boat.
ST. PAUL -- Eleven people were killed, including five on motorcycles, over the Father’s Day weekend, making it the deadliest weekend on Minnesota roads in the past 19 months, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said Monday, June 18. An off-duty Blaine police officer and his wife were killed in one of the eight fatal crashes. Steve and Susie Nanney, both 51, of Ham Lake, died Friday night when their motorcycle collided with a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old in Elk River.
DULUTH—On a day when weather didn’t make headlines at Grandma’s Marathon, it was the winners who were in the spotlight at Minnesota’s oldest marathon. Kenyan Elisha Barno became the first four-time men’s winner and American Kellyn Taylor smashed the women’s event record time Saturday in the 42nd annual 26.2-mile race from Two Harbors to Canal Park in Duluth. Barno, 32, who runs out of Santa Fe, N.M., reeled off the final 11 miles of the race by himself, crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 6 seconds.
FARGO – President Donald Trump plans to hold a rally here Wednesday, June 27, according to Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D. “Yes. He’s coming to Fargo on the 27th to support me,” the congressman said in an email to The Forum. Earlier in the week, the Washington Post reported a tiff between Cramer and the Trump administration. Cramer said Trump encouraged him to run for the Senate but seemed only to say good things about his opponent, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- An 11-year-old boy was hurt Friday morning when the truck he was riding in collided with a cow. According to a Minnesota State Patrol report, Royal Dean Larson, 45, of Windom, Minn., was driving a 2014 Ford pickup truck east on Highway 1 in Shooks Township at about 12:09 a.m. when he hit a cow in the road.
ST. PAUL -- An increase in cyclospora infections, spread through consumption of imported fresh produce, has affected at least three dozen Minnesotans and has prompted the Minnesota Department of Health to further its investigation. One outbreak has been identified among people who ate at Sonora Grill in Minneapolis in mid-May, the health department said. To date, 17 customers have reported illness. The restaurant is fully cooperating with the investigation, and investigators say they do not have any indication that there is an ongoing risk to patrons.
BACKUS, Minn.—One man was rescued and another was still missing the evening of Tuesday, June 12, when a boat overturned on a lake in north-central Minnesota's Cass County. Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch reported at 1:30 p.m., the Cass County Sheriff's Office received a report of two people thrown from a boat on Hay Lake northeast of Backus. Responders and deputies arrived and found a man who was operating the boat. He was taken to shore and treated on scene for minor injuries. The search continued into Tuesday evening for the man who was a passenger in the boat.
A 31-year-old Coon Rapids, Minn., man died after a canoe capsized in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness Saturday night, June 9, in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region. The body of Joseph Bennett Fedick was recovered from the water at 3:34 p.m. Monday about 200 yards away from the Perent Lake campsite where he had been staying, according to a report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
