A 33-year-old Pequot Lakes man is accused of choking and assaulting a female victim and threatening to kill himself with a gun. Aaron William Sheffield had his first appearance Friday in Crow Wing County District Court in Brainerd where he was charged with two felonies of domestic assault by strangulation and endangering a child in a situation that could cause harm or death; gross misdemeanor of interrupting an emergency call; and three misdemeanor domestic assault counts.
MENAHGA, Minn. — A 66-year-old Menahga man has died and another was flown from the scene with serious injuries following a two-vehicle crash Friday morning, July 21. The crash happened approximately 1 mile north of Menahga on U.S. Highway 71. The Minnesota State Patrol said Randall Lee Hinz died in the crash.
DULUTH — Duluth Mayor Emily Larson had been on the job for just over six months when the storm hit. On July 21, 2016, she was on vacation with her family, camping in Michigan, when she received word of the storm that brought 100 mph wind gusts to parts of the city and caused widespread devastation across the region. Thousands of Northland residents lost power for days. Larson said it took no more than a 45-second meeting for her family to agree that the trip should be cut short.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- An Alexandria woman who died Saturday after falling from the back of a slow-moving pickup near Lake Andrew has been identified as 61-year-old Marilyn Weedman, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s office. Her husband, Kevin Weedman, was driving the pickup, Sheriff Troy Wolberson said. Alcohol was not a factor and no charges are expected. The sheriff's office received a call at 3:36 p.m. Saturday, July 15, reporting a woman had fallen from a pickup truck south of Alexandria. The woman had a head injury and the caller stated that CPR was in progress.
BEMIDJI, Minn. —Two people were hurt Sunday afternoon when the pickup truck in which they were riding was hit by a train in Beltrami County, about 12 miles west of Bemidji. According to the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, Janice Callahan, 73, of Chatfield, Minn., was driving the pickup north at about 2:10 p.m. and entered the railroad crossing. The truck was then hit by the train.
WILLISTON, N.D. — The founder and CEO of Facebook spent Tuesday, July 11, in North Dakota, visiting Williston to learn more about the oil industry and taking a trip to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Mark Zuckerberg wrote a lengthy message on his Facebook page about the visit, encouraging followers to “get out and learn about all perspectives on issues” even while noting that “stopping climate change is one of the most important challenges of our generation.”
DULUTH, Minn. — The University of Minnesota Duluth broke ground Tuesday, July 11, for its long-awaited, $42 million Chemistry and Advanced Material Science building. University, local and state officials gathered to throw the ceremonial first shovelfuls of dirt on the site where the CAMS building will be constructed — Lot B, across University Drive from the Darland Administration Building.
Canadian convenience store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard has agreed to purchase Minnesota-based Holiday Stationstores, in a deal announced Monday, July 10. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Couche-Tard expects the sale to close during the fourth quarter of 2018. Couche-Tard’s agreement with Holiday includes all of the issued and outstanding shares of Holiday Stationstores and certain affiliated companies.
HIBBING, Minn. -- The Hibbing Police Department responded to a call regarding a dead body Monday afternoon in the 2400 block of First Avenue in Hibbing, the police department reported. Police arrived around 4:39 p.m. to find the body of a deceased man, and called in Hibbing investigators due to the “suspicious circumstances” surrounding the death. Investigators requested additional assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
FARGO -- A child is hospitalized at Sanford Children’s Hospital here after being run over by a trailer in a parade in central Minnesota’s Wadena County. The accident happened about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, on Highway 87 near Juniper Avenue in Menahga, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
