DULUTH — The body of a Minnesota National Guard member reported missing this past weekend has been found. Joel Costa, a 32-year-old National Guard member from Fredenburg Township, did not report for duty Saturday morning. He was last seen in Superior, Wis., at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10.
BAGLEY, Minn.—A 59-year-old Mahnomen man was killed in a snowmobile crash Sunday in Clearwater County. The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office received a call at 12:50 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, about an accident along McKenzie Lake Road in southern Clearwater County. When deputies arrived, they found Daniel John Stock, 59, of Mahnomen, dead at the scene, according to a release from the sheriff's office.
The body of a Fredenberg Township man reported missing over the weekend has been found, authorities said. Joel Costa, a 32-year-old member of the Minnesota National Guard, did not report for duty Saturday morning, Feb. 11. He was last seen in Superior at about 11:30 p.m. Friday. Sgt. Brandon Silgjord of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said Costa reportedly had his bags packed for his weekend drill duty but never showed. The Sheriff's Office reported Sunday night that Costa's body was found along with his vehicle at about 7 p.m. on a rural road north of Duluth.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- A driver found sleeping in his vehicle on Interstate 94 Friday morning, Feb. 10, led officers on a chase that topped 110 mph through Douglas and Pope counties. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office did not identify the suspect, who was arrested after his vehicle was stopped using spike strips. The chase started after a deputy responded to a report of a vehicle parked in the right lane of Interstate 94 at 6:09 a.m.
BRAINERD, Minn. -- The distribution of condoms through Crow Wing County Community Services was halted in January, after county officials learned it was occurring in the first place. County Administrator Tim Houle said there is no policy supported by county board authorization that allowed employees of community services to distribute condoms.
FARGO — A former University of North Dakota police officer has been ordered to serve 10 years in prison after a child pornography investigation revealed he had collected more than 50,000 images and videos. Paul Bradley Meagher, 43, Grand Forks, also must serve 10 years on supervised release following the prison term in a sentence handed down Monday, Feb. 6, by U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson.
DEER CREEK, Minn. — Three people, including a 2-year-old boy, were involved in a fatal head-on car crash Sunday afternoon near here in Otter Tail County. The victims were a 2-year-old boy and a 31-year-old woman, both from Wadena, and a 63-year-old woman from Parkers Prairie, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. When contacted late Sunday, the Minnesota State Patrol would not say if more than one of those victims was injured or died until the investigation was complete.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — A man facing an attempted murder charge was at large Friday night after shooting at a state trooper, kidnapping a baby and crisscrossing northeast North Dakota in multiple stolen vehicles, authorities say. The North Dakota Highway Patrol and other agencies have been looking for 23-year-old Daniel Michael Two Hearts since late Thursday.
BISMARCK — Christopher D.Jones, a health care executive with 19 years of experience in the industry, has been tapped to lead the North Dakota Department of Human Services. Jones, who will begin Feb. 27, is the division senior vice president of strategy and business development for Catholic Health Initiatives. Gov. Doug Burgum announced the cabinet appointment on Friday, Feb. 3.
WINNER, S.D. — A Winner woman faces a child abuse charge after law enforcement discovered bruises, bite marks and sores on a 18-month-old boy earlier this month. According to court documents, 41-year-old Cathy Joseph was charged with child abuse for allegedly striking and biting the child multiple times and failing to seek medical assistance after the boy drank from a dirty toilet.
