DETROIT LAKES - A registered level three sex offender fled Detroit Lakes briefly Friday afternoon before authorities were able to recapture him shortly thereafter. Robert Thomas Baca, 41, fled Detroit Lakes at approximately 4:30 p.m. today, breaking his terms of release from prison. Officers responded immediately, finding him roughly 30 minutes later north of Detroit Lakes near Brandy Lake. Baca was then brought to the Becker County Jail's maximum security center.
ITASCA STATE PARK, Minn. -- An unidentified individual fled on foot from law enforcement following a traffic stop Wednesday evening in Itasca State Park, according to the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office.
MITCHELL, S.D.—An owner of a Mitchell hot dog shop was sentenced to the state penitentiary after what the defense and prosecution described as a "troubling case" involving the sale of illegal drugs. Jordan Muntefering, 27, of Mitchell, was sentenced Tuesday, April 4, at the Davison County Public Safety Center in Mitchell to 15 years for distributing MDMA — also known as ecstasy or Molly — and possessing MDMA with intent to distribute in a drug-free zone.
DULUTH, Minn.—The first oceangoing vessel to reach Duluth this shipping season was celebrated Monday with the traditional ceremony to mark the milestone. The Lake Ontario took on a load of wheat at Riverland Ag/Duluth Storage on Rice's Point on Monday, after officially passing beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge on Sunday evening. Dignitaries including Duluth Mayor Emily Larson gathered aboard the ship on Monday for the ceremony, presenting the crew with several gifts.
ST. PAUL -- Minnesotans will have a chance to keep their vehicle after someone else is convinced of drunk driving in it. Gov. Mark Dayton signed a bill into law Monday, April 3, protects an innocent vehicle owner when someone else uses it without permission or knowledge. Existing law allowed the vehicle to be forfeited even if the owner was not the driver.
A 29-year-old Grand Rapids, Minn., man who shot and critically injured his son before killing himself had battled depression most of his life, the Duluth News Tribune reported Friday, March 31. David Krauss was found deceased in a home Thursday just before 4 p.m. His son, Wyatt Krauss, 8, was also found wounded by a gunshot.

Teachers' union wants discipline change ST. PAUL — Crookston, Minn., teacher Kim Davidson says she has witnessed student outbursts that seemingly came out of nowhere, such as a boy who suddenly would become upset, throw things and run out of the room. Another student would hide under the table, scream and thrash her arms when Davidson tried to help her with homework. "I couldn't understand her over-the-top reaction to what I believed to be a simple request," Davidson said. Davidson later learned that both children experienced trauma.
ST. PAUL -- A man considered a person of interest in the 1989 abduction of Jacob Wetterling has filed a federal lawsuit against the county sheriff who investigated the case. Dan Rassier filed the suit Wednesday assigned to Judge Donovan W. Frank, according to court documents.
