BISMARCK — A Becker, Minn., tree removal company has been banned from "engaging in contracting" in North Dakota, Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem's office said Thursday, Oct. 19. The attorney general's office received a complaint from a North Dakota homeowner regarding Chris Gustafson, doing business as Nature's Way Tree and Landscape, and started an investigation in August. The homeowner said he paid Gustafson $7,000 to remove trees and other work, but he didn't complete the work and damaged the home.
KELLIHER, Minn. -- One man was killed and two others injured after a home that was being placed on a foundation fell from its support on Sunday morning in northwest Minnesota, a release from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office said. Emergency personnel responded Sunday to Shotley Township, approximately 60 miles north of Bemidji, and were able to extricate Joshua O’brien, 25, of Blackduck, from under the building and initiated lifesaving efforts, but were unsuccessful.
WHITE EARTH, Minn. — The White Earth Nation is alerting residents to a flurry of drug overdoses in the last day or so that have claimed at least one life, according to a notice posted Friday, Oct. 13, on the nation's Facebook page. The White Earth Drug Task Force has made community officials aware that four people on the White Earth Reservation suffered overdoses, with the individuals experiencing respiratory failure or falling into a coma. One death was reported.
STURGIS, S.D. -- The administration of a South Dakota high school on Thursday, Oct. 12, canceled its homecoming football game and activities after a racist comment was painted on the side of a car and the image posted a social media site. The stunt, part of an unsponsored car bash during homecoming, now involves the Sturgis Police Department for possible investigation, the Meade School District said on a Facebook post.
CLIMAX, Minn.—A Neilsville, Minn., man who died in a crash Tuesday morning, Oct. 10, in northwest Minnesota was not wearing a seat belt, state troopers said. Jason Jerome Nelson, 36, died after the 1999 Chevrolet Blazer he was driving hit a 1993 GMC Aero semi just before 7 a.m., according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The semi driven by 21-year-old Dalton Brian Fredrickson of Thief River Falls was stopped on U.S. Highway 75 about 2 miles south of Climax.
DULUTH, Minn. -- Medical examiners have identified human remains found Sept. 28 along the Duluth Lakewalk as that of William Robert Saker, a Duluth man who hadn't been since March 10. The Duluth Police Department said Tuesday, Oct. 10, that the Midwest Medical Examiner's office had not yet determined a cause of death, but police have already said that foul play was not suspected.
Pink balloons were released during a candlelight vigil for 21-year-old North Dakota State University student Ellie Helm Monday, Oct. 9, on the NDSU campus. Helm was killed in an ATV crash Friday evening, Sept. 29, in Wisconsin.
BEMIDJI, Minn.—Ralphie May, the nationally known stand-up comedian who had to cancel or postpone several regional shows last year because of his derogatory jokes about Native Americans, has died. Representatives released a statement Friday, Oct. 6, saying May, 45, had been battling pneumonia and was found dead Friday morning at a private residence in Las Vegas. The cause of death was cardiac arrest.
TENNEY, Minn.—A 21-year-old construction worker died after falling 150 feet from the top of an elevator here Thursday afternoon, Oct. 5, the Wilkin County Sheriff's Office reported. The man was working at the Wheaton Dumont Co-op Elevator with two other men on a platform. They were adjusting another platform to connect to the platform that they were on when the man fell, the sheriff's office reported. The accident was reported about 2:45 p.m. Tenney is about 25 miles southeast of Wahpeton-Breckenridge.
BEMIDJI, Minn.—Three people were arrested Thursday, Oct. 5, after an incident involving gunshots outside of a gas station just west of Bemidji. Police received a 911 call reporting gunshots at Pete's Place West at the 7100 block of Pete Lane NW, according to a release from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's deputies, Bemidji police and other law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.
