FARGO — A former University of North Dakota police officer has been ordered to serve 10 years in prison after a child pornography investigation revealed he had collected more than 50,000 images and videos. Paul Bradley Meagher, 43, Grand Forks, also must serve 10 years on supervised release following the prison term in a sentence handed down Monday, Feb. 6, by U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson.
DEER CREEK, Minn. — Three people, including a 2-year-old boy, were involved in a fatal head-on car crash Sunday afternoon near here in Otter Tail County. The victims were a 2-year-old boy and a 31-year-old woman, both from Wadena, and a 63-year-old woman from Parkers Prairie, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. When contacted late Sunday, the Minnesota State Patrol would not say if more than one of those victims was injured or died until the investigation was complete.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. — A man facing an attempted murder charge was at large Friday night after shooting at a state trooper, kidnapping a baby and crisscrossing northeast North Dakota in multiple stolen vehicles, authorities say. The North Dakota Highway Patrol and other agencies have been looking for 23-year-old Daniel Michael Two Hearts since late Thursday.
BISMARCK — Christopher D.Jones, a health care executive with 19 years of experience in the industry, has been tapped to lead the North Dakota Department of Human Services. Jones, who will begin Feb. 27, is the division senior vice president of strategy and business development for Catholic Health Initiatives. Gov. Doug Burgum announced the cabinet appointment on Friday, Feb. 3.
WINNER, S.D. — A Winner woman faces a child abuse charge after law enforcement discovered bruises, bite marks and sores on a 18-month-old boy earlier this month. According to court documents, 41-year-old Cathy Joseph was charged with child abuse for allegedly striking and biting the child multiple times and failing to seek medical assistance after the boy drank from a dirty toilet.
WASHINGTON — Approval of the Dakota Access Pipeline easement to cross Lake Oahe is "imminent," members of North Dakota's Congressional delegation said Tuesday, Jan. 31. Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., said Acting Secretary of the Army Robert Speer informed him Tuesday he has directed to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to proceed with the easement needed to complete the pipeline. Hoeven released the statement after meeting with Speer and Vice President Mike Pence. Hoeven spokesman Don Canton said the easement is expected within days.
BAUDETTE, Minn. - One person is dead after a fatal car-versus-pedestrian accident in northwest Minnesota. A man was driving in a car 12 miles north of Baudette Sunday night, Jan. 29. The driver saw a person kneeling on the road and tried to swerve out of the way but hit the person, Minnesota State Patrol said in a statement. The victim's name has not been released and the driver was not hurt.
COLUMBIA HEIGHTS, Minn. - Two people were injured and a house was significantly damaged when a bus crashed into a house in Columbia Heights late Friday afternoon. Fire Chief Gary Gorman said the owner of the house was sitting in his living room around 5 p.m. Friday when the Anoka County Traveler bus, operated by First Transit, crashed into the house.
ROLLA, N.D.—Rolette County Sheriff's Deputy Colt Allery was fatally shot and three other deputies are on paid administrative leave after a vehicle chase turned deadly Wednesday, Jan. 18. Rolette County Sheriff Gerald Medrud said Allery, 29, had been working with the department for about three months. He previously worked for the Rolla Police Department and as a tribal police officer before joining the Sheriff's Department.
VINELAND — A 20-year-old man involved in an armed home invasion and assault late Thursday night in northern Mille Lacs County was shot and killed by a responding sheriff's deputy, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported Friday.
