ROUND LAKE -- The news of a cougar shot Sunday in Jackson County has caught the attention of the entire state, it seems. According to Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Predatory Biologist Dan Stark, the fatal shooting of a 125 pound male cougar by a citizen was a remarkably rare event, possibly the first time in recent years a protected animal has been shot and then reported to the DNR.
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- As of Monday afternoon, two teens from Rock Rapids, Iowa were still missing, according to Lyon County Sheriff Blythe Bloemendaal. A Sioux Falls, S.D. teen has also been reported missing, and all three were last seen in Sioux Falls together. All are considered runaways and were last seen early Saturday morning in a beige 2005 Hyundai Elantra with Iowa license plate 849XIO. "The last spot we could trace their cell phone was in Sioux Falls," Bloemendaal stated.
LAKE WILSON - The Lake Wilson and Chandler Fire Departments were dispatched to a report of a vaporizer explosion at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday night at the Lake Wilson Grain Elevator. With the elevator located directly across the street from Lake Wilson's Fire Hall, firefighters were on the scene in a matter of minutes, with Chandler's mutual aid not far behind.
WINDOM -- A 26-year-old Jackson man is facing charges of kidnapping, burglary and child endangerment after holding a woman against her will and leaving a 1-year-old child alone. Adam William Gorden was charged Monday with kidnapping, first-degree burglary, felony domestic assault, false imprisonment, child neglect and child endangerment -- with a combined maximum penalty of 70 years incarceration and/or $106,000 in fines. WORTHINGTON -- Authorities are looking for a Worthington woman last seen June 22. According to Worthington Police Detective Dave Hoffman, Carly Chenal Rienstra Romero left with her computer and her purse. "None of her friends have seen her, her mother hasn't seen her," Hoffman said Wednesday. "We just want to make sure she's all right." Romero, 26, is white with blonde hair and brown eyes, is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs approximately 140 pounds.
LUVERNE -- Judge Timothy Connell informed the jury Wednesday afternoon it would probably begin deliberation today in the trial of Randy Leeroyal Swaney. "The end is coming," Connell said, who was greeted by sighs of relief from a jury who has listened to testimony for nine days. Swaney is accused of murdering Blue Mound State Park worker Carrie Christine Nelson on May 20, 2001, while robbing the park office.
Just days after the Worthington Police Department asked for help in identifying a man accused of posing as an Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) agent, they were contacted by an anonymous caller who reported a person who matched the description. Roberto Lazzu Rivera, 31, of Worthington, was arrested last week and taken to the Prairie Justice Center, where he was later formally charged in Nobles County District Court with two counts of first-degree burglary, theft under $250 and two counts of harassment/stalking. WORTHINGTON -- Almost four months after having two horses removed from his custody due to alleged neglect and cruelty, Larry Leo Ruesch, 69, of Worthington, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Nobles County District Court to one count of overworking or mistreating animals: neglect -- substantial bodily harm, a charge that was amended to a gross misdemeanor, and one misdemeanor count of equine hoof care. In late July, a paint mare and miniature mare were removed from Ruesch's custody after a passer-by noticed their debilitated condition and contacted the Nobles County Sheriff's Department.
