ST. PAUL—A GOP House plan to fund new veterans homes in the state, including one in Bemidji, would tap excess funds from U.S. Bank Stadium, a plan that brought skepticism from Gov. Mark Dayton on Wednesday, April 18. The House State Government Finance Committee held a press conference Wednesday morning at the Capitol to describe how its bill would build veterans homes in Bemidji, Preston and Montevideo.
BEMIDJI—The two organizations working to bring a new sports and wellness complex to Bemidji are taking a brief "pause" in the project to ensure all stakeholders, including the city, are on the same page. The $27 million facility, estimated at 175,000 square feet, will be located on Sanford Health's Bemidji campus and include three sections: a wellness center with aquatic space, a multi-use sports facility with a bubble roof and a two-sheet ice arena.

BEMIDJI, Minn. – A Bemidji woman was arraigned Monday in the death of a 6-year-old girl last month at a south Bemidji apartment complex. Rachel Downer, 22, was arrested Friday and appeared in court Monday to face a second-degree manslaughter charge in the hypothermia death of her cousin, 6-year-old Mercedes Mayfield. Mayfield was found lying outside on the front step by her mother, Malika Peoples, at their apartment building at 924 Carter Circle early Feb. 27.
