Three arrested in Pope County arson, theft cases GLENWOOD -- Three suspects were arrested Thursday in connection with a string of crimes this fall that included a cabin fire near Lowry, the theft of a fish house and other items from the cabin site, and vandalism at the Prairie Lake Cooperative in Lowry. The Pope County Sheriff's Office said two of the suspects, ages 23 and 17, are from Alexandria.
Police officer Tom Decker, who was fatally shot in Cold Spring, had formerly worked in law enforcement in Meeker County. Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner says Decker died at the scene after he was shot late Thursday behind an apartment in Cold Springs. Officer Decker, 31, worked 18 months in Watkins Police Department in Meeker County, according to his biography posted on the Cold Springs Police Department's web site. A Cold Spring native and Rocori High School graduate, Decker attended Alexandria Technical College, graduating in 2002 with an associate's degree majoring in law enforcement.
COLD SPRING, Minn. (AP) -- Authorities say the police officer who was fatally shot in central Minnesota is 31-year-old Tom Decker of the Cold Spring Police Department. Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner says Decker died at the scene after he was shot late Thursday behind an apartment in Cold Spring near St. Cloud. Sanner said a 34-year-old man is being held Friday on suspicion of second-degree murder in Decker's death. Stearns County Chief Deputy Bruce Bechtold says he believes the suspect was in the residence that the officer was called to check.
LITCHFIELD -- The Litchfield Fire Department and the Department of Natural Resources were called around 1:30 p.m. Thursday to contain a controlled burn that started an electrical pole on fire. According to Meeker County Sheriff Jeff Norlin, Logan Pautzke, 26, of Litchfield reported he was burning a 20-acre section of wetlands when the pole caught on fire. The fire department put out the fire on the pole, which sustained $3,000 to $4,000 in damage.
