By Howard Voigt MSHSL MINNEAPOLIS -- Blue Earth Area (13-0) broke open a close game by scoring the final 23 points to claim a 30-7 win over Rochester Lourdes and the Class AAA championship at Prep Bowl XXXI at the Metrodome. The win for the Buccaneers, who were ranked No. 2 in the final Associated Press poll, represents the school's first state football championship. Blue Earth Area junior David Franta opened the scoring midway through the second quarter by rambling 79 yards for a touchdown.
By Howard Voigt MSHSL Mahnomen utilized an efficient ball-control running game to wear down Bethlehem Academy en route to a 20-14 win and the Class A Championship at Prep Bowl XXXI at the Metrodome. The win for the Indians was the school's seventh state football championship and their first since 1998. The Indians took the opening kickoff and marched 74 yards in 10 plays to take a 6-0 lead. Senior quarterback Jacob Pavek capped the drive with a 17-yard touchdown run.
Minneapolis -- Caledonia and Eden Prairie repeated as Minnesota football champions on Friday in the first day of the two-day, seven-class Prep Bowl. Caledonia won its third straight Class AA championship with a 25-22 win over Moose Lake-Willow River. It's Caledonia's sixth championship overall and its fifth title in the last six years. Eden Prairie won its eighth championship with a 28-7 win over Lakeville North in the first Class AAAAAA title game Friday night. Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley opened the day with a 40-22 win over Grand Meadow in the 9-man championship game.
Karla Schaefer and Adam Hemmesch were united in marriage Oct. 13 in Lake Henry. The bride is the daughter of Tim and Cindy Schaefer of Paynesville. The groom is the son of Frank and Patti Hemmesch of Paynesville. Matron of honor was Peggy Schaefer, sister-in-law of the bride. Bride's attendants were Kari Schaefer, sister-in-law of the bride; Tricia Suedbeck, sister of the groom; and Morgan Haag, friend of the couple. Flower girls were Alivia Schaefer, niece of the bride, and Fiona Suedbeck, niece of the groom. Best man was Matt Gardner, friend of the couple.

WILLMAR -- Registration is now open for the 2013 Willmar/Spicer Polar Bear Plunge, presented by Minnesota law enforcement to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota. The Willmar/Spicer Plunge will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 26 at Zorbaz on Green Lake, 159 Ave. S in Spicer. Check-in will be at the Spicer American Legion, 155 Lake Ave. S. Across the state, plungers raise funds to jump into Minnesota's frigid waters.
WILLMAR -- The West Central Tribune kicks off its 19th annual Warm the Children campaign this week. The campaign is designed to help provide warm winter clothing to area children. It is expected that up to 500 children across the region will receive warm winter clothing again this year, through the efforts of the 2012 campaign. Goal of this year's campaign is $40,000. Warm the Children is designed to help needy families throughout the Tribune's coverage area provide warm winter clothing for their children.
TIOGA, N.D. -- Lorin Bakken recalls it was 2007 when he began seeing his name in the newspaper and on TV frequently as the oil boom started to heat up. Since then, his family name has become synonymous with oil and opportunity. "I feel so honored," Lorin said in a rare interview. Lorin is the only son of Henry O. Bakken. The Bakken formation -- the pool of oil that lies beneath western North Dakota, northeast Montana and part of Canada -- is named for the well drilled in 1951 and 1952 on the Henry O.
