Meet the 2016 Tribune All-Area Baseball Team
ST. PAUL — Willmar boys athletes set school records in three relays, Nadir Yusuf ran a personal-record in the 3,200 and Sophie Schmitz qualified for today’s 800-meter run final at the Minnesota State Track and Field Meet on Friday at Hamline University’s Klas Field. The Willmar boys 4x200 team of Bello White, Isaac Kobienia, Ryan Liimatta and Max Doering also qualified for today’s final. Willmar’s 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams set school marks. The 4x400 record stood since 2001. But only the 4x200 team advanced.
ST. PAUL — In the Class A meet, two New London-Spicer relay teams and two from Montevideo advanced to today’s finals, and four individual area athletes also qualified for finals. The Montevideo 4x200 team of Denis Maldonado, Nate Heig, Preston Herfurth and Adam DeZeeuw qualified seventh in 1:32.46. The Monte girls 4x100 team of Anais Sorenson, Molly Reeves, Morgan Reidinger, Jessica Tastad qualified fifth in 50.54. The NLS 4x100 team of Cody King, Gideon Mische, Kelly Bennetts and Jackson Ness qualified seventh in 43.85.
Despite competing in one of the most individualistic team sports, the Willmar boys and girls track and field teams stress community. The Willmar boys won the Class AA state True Team championship in Stillwater in late May, and the Cardinals girls team placed second. So it’s no big surprise that, out of eight possible relay events, the Card boys and girls placed seven teams in the Minnesota State Track and Field Class AA Meet, which begins today at Klas Field on the Hamline University campus in St. Paul. The Cardinals boys placed all four of its relay teams.
