MINNEAPOLIS -- North Wood's Cade Goggleye banked in a miracle shot from beyond half court to lead the Grizzlies to a 54-51 victory over Central Minnesota Christian School in the Class A Minnesota State Boys Basketball Tournament on Thursday at Williams Arena. Goggleye's 3-point heave came just seconds after CMCS' Austin Marcus hit a shot with three seconds left to tie the game at 51.
The Central Minnesota Christian School boys basketball team will see some familiar faces at the Class A Minnesota State Boys Basketball Tournament this week. The Bluejays' first-round opponent won't be one of them. Five of the eight teams in the Class A field played in the 2016 tournament.The 26-3 Bluejays on Saturday drew the No. 3 seed behind top-seed and defending champion Minneapolis North and No. 2 seed and 2016 runner-up Goodhue. The Bluejays play one of the newcomers, unseeded North Woods (29-1), at 5 p.m. Thursday at Williams Arena.
ST. PAUL — Claire Killian scored 24 points and Watertown-Mayer held off a late New London-Spicer rally to win the Class AA third-place game in the Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the Gangelhoff Center on the Concordia-St. Paul campus.
The New London-Spicer girls basketball team kicks off its 17th trip to the Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament against Esko in a Class AA quarterfinals game at 4 p.m. today at Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota campus. While the Wildcats own the No. 4 seed, they have been a formidable opponent for two other Class AA seeds. During the regular season, NLS (26-3) lost twice to Class AA No. 3-seed Watertown-Mayer (26-3), the second lost by three points in double overtime.
MARSHALL - The New London-Spicer girls basketball team defeated Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 62-55 to claim the Section 3AA championship and a spot in next week's Class AA Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament. Four Wildcats scored in double figures, with Morgan Swenson scoring 12 of her 14 points in the second half as NLS overcame a two-point halftime deficit. Shea Oman, Erin Tebben and Kabrie Weber all scored 12 points for the Wildcats. NLS is making its second-straight trip to the state tournament and its 17th overall.
