ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Ridgewater volleyball team will play for an NJCAA Division III national championship for a 10th time Saturday after winning semifinals and quarterfinals matches on Friday at the national tournament. The Warriors defeated Jefferson (N.Y.) in three sets in the quarterfinals and advanced to the title match with a tough, five-set win over Eastfield (Texas) in the semis. Ridgewater plays Harper (Illinois) at 2 p.m. Saturday at the UCR Regional Sports Center.
Willmar Stingers co-owner Marc Jerzak introduced former Stinger Jacob Barnes to a nice gathering of fans and supporters on Thursday, saying the now-Milwaukee Brewers reliever considered Willmar to be his second home. And Barnes got a reception that suggested Willmar considers him one of its own. Barnes, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound right-hander, is the first Stinger to reach the majors, and he's one of three former Willmar players to make their Major League Baseball debut this season.

FERGUS FALLS -- The Willmar football team scored three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter -- the last with less than a minute to play -- to dethrone top-seed Fergus Falls 35-34 on Saturday and earn a spot in the Section 8AAAA championship game. It's the second-straight year Willmar has defeated the top-seed Otters on their home field. The Cardinals will play Rocori -- they lost to the Spartans 7-0 in last year's championship game -- at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 at Alexandria High School. How tough is Minnesota prep football's Section 5A? Two-time defending state champion Minneota is 8-0 and the Associated Press' No. 1-ranked team. And the No. 2 seed in 5A. Wabasso is 7-1 and can't crack the top two. Dawson-Boyd is 6-2 with the two losses coming against teams that are a combined 15-1. And the Blackjacks are the No. 4 seed. With prep playoffs beginning Tuesday, it wouldn't be a stretch to believe any of those four could be state-tournament teams were the geography configured any other way
The Willmar Cardinals volleyball team will ride a 13-game winning streak into the Section 8AAA playoffs next week. The section seeds will be announced Sunday but the 19-4 Cardinals are the No. 2 seed behind top-seed Moorhead based on Minnesota-scores.com's QRF ranking. Moorhead is ranked No. 18 among the state's Class AAA teams and Willmar holds the No. 30 state-wide ranking. Other area teams have their pairings set already:
The Willmar boys soccer team avenged a loss to defending state champion Orono in last season's section championship game with a victory over the Spartans on Tuesday in the Section 6A title game
