She is a 2003 graduate of Willmar Senior High School and is a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, majoring in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Mellema is the son of Beth and Burnell Mellema of Willmar. He is a 2003 graduate of Willmar Senior High School and a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, majoring in Biblical languages.

He is a graduate of Redwood Falls High School and Iowa State University. He is employed as an area sales manager for Pioneer Hi-Bred.
