WILLMAR -- During the past two months, the city Public Works Department has been spraying mosquito larvicide in areas where grass and cattails are standing along the edges of stormwater impoundment areas as part of Willmar's annual mosquito control program. The department has five employees who are state-certified to apply pesticide. One of those is heavy equipment operator Richard Doll, who was spraying Thursday in the Vos Park area. Public Works Superintendent Ron Gilbertson says spraying should be completed shortly.
WILLMAR -- A Willmar man has won $10,000 in a Minnesota State Lottery scratch game. According to a news release from the State Lottery, Joshua Mackedanz claimed the prize May 23. The winning ticket was purchased at Dooley Petroleum on U.S. Highway 12 West in Murdock. Since 1990, the lottery has generated $2.2 billion for state programs. WILLMAR -- The first severe thunderstorm of the season arrived Wednesday morning, bringing brief but heavy rain, along with scattered hail and strong winds. Several west central Minnesota locations received up to an inch of rain during the storm, which rolled through Willmar at around 11 a.m. At the Willmar Municipal Airport, just over 1 inch of rain was recorded in less than an hour and 1.18 inches at the Montevideo-Chippewa County Airport, according to information collected by the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities.

WILLMAR -- Allied Charities of Minnesota is hosting regional informational meetings in June to discuss electronic gaming and opportunities for local charities. A meeting will be held in Willmar from 5 to 8 p.m. June 18 at the American Legion, 220 19th Ave. S.W. A light meal and beverages will be provided. The meetings are open to qualified charities that operate gaming. Information will be provided about the potential for e-games for charitable gaming operators.

WILLMAR -- Ted Huisinga and Ray Norling, leaders of Life-Science Innovations and Affiliates, were among the Minnesotans honored this past week with the University of Minnesota's 2013 Siehl Prize for Excellence in Agriculture.
