ATWATER — Pending the outcome of an environmental review, Bushmills Ethanol Inc. near Atwater will expand its facilities and increase annual production of denatured ethanol from 65 million gallons a year to 100 million gallons. Public comments on the project will be accepted until Feb. 8. Bushmills, a cooperative comprised of 415 farmers, owns a dry mill plant about 1½ miles west of Atwater that began operating in December of 2005.

Starbuck woman injured in crash WEST UNION TOWNSHIP — An 18-year-old Starbuck woman was injured in a one-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Interstate 94 in West Union Township in Todd County. The State Patrol says Sierra Marie Jordahl had been driving a 2000 Chevy Lumina west on I-94 northwest of Sauk Centre. Around 12:45 p.m., she lost control of the vehicle on the snow and ice-covered roads. It went off the road into the ditch and rolled.
The Willmar Fire Department sponsored a poster contest for community fifth grade students. The theme for this year's Willmar Fire Department contest was "Don't Wait, Check the Date". The winners were presented with gift cards for all their hard work. Kennedy Elementary students Trevor Blaschko and Nolan Neuman from Mrs. Myer's class received first and third places for their entries, while second place was awarded to Myah Johnson from Mrs. Peele's class at Community Christian School.
KMS band plays at Pearl Harbor The KMS Marching Saints marching band took part in the 75th anniversary observance of the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, as part of a massive national band and choir. Over 80 members of the KMS band joined hundreds of other musicians from around the country at the USS Battleship Missouri Memorial to mark the day. The band and the community raised $250,000 to fly the students, chaperones and instruments to Hawaii. Donations came from a wide range of sources, including veterans groups and foundations.
Summer weather brought many storms The year started with the Winter That Wasn't — an El Nino weather pattern that brought uncommonly warm temperatures and little snowfall. But by summer the switch was flipped to storms and rain, rain, rain.
ST. PAUL — The water level on Lac qui Parle Lake will soon be down to the normal range for winter, and should stay there for at least the near term. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, announced Friday that it plans to reduce outflows from the Lac qui Parle Dam near Watson early next week. Outflows from the dam are currently around 2,000 cubic feet per second. The Corps plans to reduce the outflows to around 1,200 cubic feet per second as early as Monday, it said in a news release.

CLARA CITY — Bethany Reformed Church will dedicate its building addition following the morning service Sunday. In November of 2013 the church voted to build a multipurpose addition and embarked on a fundraising endeavor to raise about 40 percent of the projected cost before starting. This was accomplished by the following Easter, but construction was delayed until the spring of 2015 to ensure favorable weather.
WILLMAR — The West Central Association of Realtors has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Housing Opportunity Program of the National Association of Realtors to support activities that create and expand affordable housing opportunities. The grant will be used to institute a coordinated entry system for the Southwest Minnesota Continuum of Care housing services group, along with advertising, promoting and implementing the initiative.
