WILLMAR — A total of 10 vinyls were unveiled Thursday for images that will soon adorn traffic signals lining First Street in Willmar. The Willmar Area Arts Council started the Traffic Signal Box project in March of 2015 by applying for a Legacy Planning Grant through the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council. The intent was to issue a request for qualifications from interested artists, select and commission 12 of them to submit a detailed rendition of what they would put on a traffic signal box. The council received one response.
WILLMAR — The Kandiyohi County Public Works Department office in Willmar announced Friday that, weather permitting, work will begin at 7 a.m. Tuesday on Kandiyohi County Road 5 from 45th Avenue Southwest to Minnesota Highway 23, approximately two miles southwest of Willmar. Through traffic will be detoured east on County Road 3, north on U.S. Highway 71 and west on state Highway 23. The construction zone is closed to all traffic.

Granite Falls woman dies in one-vehicle crash GRANITE FALLS — A Granite Falls woman was killed early Wednesday morning in a one-vehicle crash in Yellow Medicine County. The Minnesota State Patrol identified her as Cerrina Emily Schmaus, 48. According to the State Patrol, the accident happened around 12:35 a.m. Wednesday on state Highway 67 in Minnesota Falls Township when a southbound 2002 Dodge Caravan left the road and struck an embankment and a tree.

MARSHALL — Nancy Straw has been named the next executive director of the United Community Action Partnership, a nonprofit geared toward helping communities and addressing poverty on the local level. United Community Action Partnership serves southwest Minnesota in the counties of Cottonwood, Jackson, Kandiyohi, Lincoln, Lyon, McLeod, Meeker, Redwood and Renville. It was formed from the merger of Heartland Community Action Agency, based in Willmar, and Western Community Action Agency, based in Marshall. Straw has previous nonprofit experience and ties to the region.
KERKHOVEN — Kimberly Harkema, city clerk for Kerkhoven, is now a Minnesota Certified Municipal Clerk through the Minnesota Clerks & Finance Officers Association. To obtain the certification, clerks must complete advanced educational training along with being an association member for three years and affirm they follow the association's code of ethics.
