Prep Tennis Minnewaska 5, LQPV/DB 2 Minnewaska won all four singles matches to become the West Central Conference Champions Monday afternoon. LQPV/DB won two of the three doubles matches but the Lakers earned a three-set victory at No. 3 doubles to win the fifth match. WILLMAR — Cayle Hovland and Noah Slagter were named winners of the Lions Award as Willmar High School's top senior athletes for 2018. WHS athletes were honored at the school's annual awards program on Sunday. Among many honors, Hovland earned 16 varsity letters, was an all-state basketball player and a multiple state track and field entrant and a member of the Cardinals' state-tournament basketball team.
PRINSBURG - Despite 14 walks, Central Minnesota Christian was in the game until Lac qui Parle Valley closed the deal with a seven-run seventh as the Eagles defeated the Bluejays 12-1 on Saturday. LQPV's Wyatt Halvorson allowed a hit and three walks while striking out 10 over six innings. Brett Baldwin finished up. EDEN PRAIRIE - The Willmar softball team split a pair of games at the Hutchinson Invitational, which was played at Eden Prairie's dome on Saturday. The Cardinals defeated Hutchinson 3-2 and lost to Eden Prairie 17-7. Against Hutchinson, Willmar scored three runs in the third to back winning pitcher Mackenzie Jones. Jones worked seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out nine. Hannah Johnson had three hits and drove in a run, Jordyn Swoboda had two hits and an RBI and Jones helped herself with a run-scoring single in the third.
ALEXANDRIA—A trio of Fischers earned the Willmar tennis team's points in a 4-3 loss to Alexandria on Thursday. Peyton Fischer defeated Matt Vogel 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and Will Fischer took home a 7-6, 6-4 over Jacob Partington at No. 2 singles. MINNEAPOLIS — Long-time ACGC coach Doug Torgerson was inducted into the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Torgerson was one of six 2018 inductees honored at the April 7 banquet. The class included Mike Berseth of Hutchinson, Steve Fedie of Orono, Ray Tri of Eden Valley-Watkins, Terry Turek of Le Sueur Henderson and Brainerd Dispatch sports editor Mike Bialka. Torgerson, a 1964 Belgrade High School graduate, competed in football and basketball as a prep athlete, earning five letters.
REDWOOD FALLS—The BOLD girls track and field team placed second and the Warriors boys team placed third at the Redwood Valley Indoor Meet on Thursday. The BOLD girls got first-place finishes from Haley Ackerson in the 60-meter dash and in the long jump, and Autumn Montgomery won the pole vault. The girls 4x100 relay team also placed first.
