The Atwater Karting Speedway will host an International Karting Federation event on Saturday and Sunday, in addition to its usual Friday night of racing. The IKF Region 3 Northern Tour event will start with hot laps at 4 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday with races to follow each day, according to the IKF Web site. Other Region 3 events are at Pipestone June 24-25, Blue Earth Aug. 26-27 and Glyndon Sept. 16-17.
BURNSVILLE - Brian Ward remained unbeaten during the individual postseason as the Litchfield junior won his first two matches at the Class A State Individual Tournament Thursday to advance to the semifinals. Ward (20-7) upended Peter Swanson of Waseca, which beat Litchfield in the third-place match Wednesday in the team competition, 6-3, 6-1. Ward then posted another straight-set win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over John Wight of St. Paul Academy in the quarterfinals. "I can't recall anyone from Litchfield in the semifinals," said Litchfield coach John Carlson.
GRANITE FALLS - Pipestone got to a tired Eddie Massee in the sixth inning as the Arrows used a five-run sixth to blank Lac qui Parle Valley 6-0 in the championship game of the Section 3AA tournament. Jared Theis stifled the Eagles (19-6) by allowing just one hit, a single from Brock Kanstrup, the second hitter in the Eagles' batting order, in the first inning. Theis did walk four and hit a batter, but LQPV couldn't break the senior. The Arrows had a string of three consecutive hits in the sixth that led to five runs, including a two-run homer from Doug Mead.
MARSHALL - Southwest United plated six unearned runs in the sixth inning Thursday en route to upending Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 8-1 in the Section 3A final. KMS (16-5) had gotten with one at 2-1 in the top half of the sixth after Jared Johnson scored on Jason Fernholz's ground out.

ONAMIA - Freshman Emily Roering shot a 79 and eighth-grader Courtney Boe an 82 to help Minnewaska Area grab the first-day lead at the Class A State Girls' Golf Tournament Wednesday at Izaty's Resort. Minnewaska Area, which was the only team in the eight-team field to have all six golfers shoot under 100, shot a 335, one stroke ahead of Lake City and seven ahead of Albany. The Lakers have no seniors on the team. The Minnewaska Area boys were fifth after the first day, shooting a 321. Mounds Park Academy led the eight-team field with a 308.
CROOKSTON - Former Willmar Cardinal basketball player Cathy Behr has been named to a key position in the University of Minnesota, Crookston, Athletic Department. The Golden Eagles announced Tuesday that the 2004 UM-Crookston graduate will be the new Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Women's Administrator. According to the news release, she will work with marketing/promotions, game supervision and management of the media relations office, as well as Title IX compliance. Behr amplified her Bachelor of Science Degree in Sport & Recreation Management with a series of challenging positions.
The Willmar Cardinals softball team opens against Minnetonka in the Class AAA state fastpitch softball tournament at 11 a.m. today at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Willmar (19-4), which won the Central Lakes Conference title, was third in Class AAA last spring. Minnetonka (21-2), the Lake Conference champion, is making its first trip to state since 2000. Win or lose, Willmar will play again at 5 p.m. today.
Litchfield and Paynesville meet in the Section 5AA final today at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Morris faces St. Cloud Cathedral in the 6AA final at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud, Lac qui Parle Valley will battle Pipestone in the 3AA final at Granite Falls and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg plays Southwest United in the 3A final at Marshall. All games begin at 5 p.m. and a second game would follow if necessary.
