SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The Ridgewater College baseball team split a doubleheader Friday with the Briar Cliff University JV team. The Warriors opened the twinbill with a 5-1 win before falling 4-3 in the second game. Ridgewater (14-2) is slated to open its Minnesota Community College Conference Southern Division schedule with a doubleheader Sunday at Rochester beginning at 1 p.m. Ridgewater played twice in Seward, Neb., on Thursday before heading to Iowa.
The Willmar track and field team will be outdoors for the first time this year at the Sartell Invite at St. John's University today. The Cardinals, three Central Lakes Conference teams and Bemidji will participate.
The Willmar Sportsmen's Club will hold its annual Fish Fry from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Willmar American Legion Club. The cost is $7 per adult and $3 for children 12 and under. Proceeds will be used to send youth to the Long Lake Conservation Camp, lease walleye rearing ponds and other local conservation projects.
ST. CLOUD -- Willmar showed depth at singles taking three points on the way to a 5-2 win at St. Cloud Apollo on Friday in the Cardinals' season and Central Lakes Conference tennis opener. "We looked very good for so early in the season taking three matches at singles," said coach Loren Holter.
GRANITE FALLS -- After a pair of weather-related postponements, Yellow Medicine East launched its boys tennis season Friday with a 6-1 non-conference win over MACCRAY. YME has eight seniors in its top 11.
BROWNTON -- Jordan Tanner had all three Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City hits, but the Falcons fell to McLeod West 6-2 in a non-conference baseball game Friday. Joel Ahlers allowed two hits over five scoreless innings for the win.
The Willmar Cardinals are hoping to finally open the tennis season when they play at St. Cloud Apollo today, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Some events in the area have already postpones games today because of wet grounds from the recent snow.
The KRA Speedway at the fairgrounds in Willmar has schedule May 3 for its opener, the first of five Thursday night race nights in May. Start time is 6:30 p.m. Four race nights are scheduled for both June and July with five in August, including the county fair on Aug. 8. The regular season concludes Sept. 6. The Fall Festival is slated for Sept. 21-22.
Optimistic that the snow cover will melt away in the next couple of days, the Litchfield Blues amateur baseball team is scheduled to open their season Sunday at 1:30 p.m. against Kimball at Optimist Park. The Blues were to open Saturday at Elrosa, but the game was postponed.
HASTINGS, Neb. -- The Ridgewater College baseball team didn't show any rust for not having played in over two weeks as the Warriors won a pair of games Thursday. Ridgewater, behind two solid pitching performances, posted a 9-1 win over Concordia University JV (Neb.) before beating Hastings College JV 6-1. Freshman right-hander Chad Willenbring gave up only two hits and two walks in six innings to spark the Warriors in the opener. Ridgewater then got another strong outing from sophomore right-hander Chris Koenig against Hastings as the St.
