MURDOCK -- Patina Queenan tossed a no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg took advantage of 26 free passes en route to sweeping Minneota/Canby in the Camden Conference Tuesday. KMS (7-1, 11-2) won the first game 17-2 after having nine hit batsmen and 11 walks with only five hits.
GLENWOOD -- Alicia Pfenninger hurled a two-hit shutout to lead Minnewaska to a 3-0 win over Sauk Centre Tuesday. The win gives the Lakers (10-1, 15-1) a 2½-game lead over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in the West Central North Conference standings. Pfenninger struck out four and walked one, while being backed up by six hits from the Minnewaska offense, which scored two runs in the first inning. BENSON -- Courtney Frank hit a run-scoring single in the bottom of the second, which was enough for Benson/Hancock (6-1, 10-3) to pull out a 1-0 win over Montevideo in West Central South Conference softball Tuesday. Jenny Noordmans scored the game's only run after she single to right field, advanced on an error and scored on Frank's single. Katie Razink pitched her fifth shutout of the season, allowing six hits.
Willmar placed fourth in both the boys and girls Section 8AAA True Team Track and Field Meet on Tuesday at Moorhead. Individual results will appear in Thursday's paper.
A women's and co-rec beach volleyball league are being offered by the New London-Spicer Community Education department. Matches will be played on Saulsbury Beach on Green Lake in Spicer. The women's league will play on Mondays starting June 5 and the co-rec league will run on Wednesdays beginning June 7. Fee is $125 for both leagues. Kurt Langer, the high school baseball coach for Rocori, died Friday at the age of 36. Funeral services were held Monday. The cause of death is unknown. Langer, who had coached three days earlier, started feeling ill on Thursday. The former Melrose standout athlete was also Rocori's offensive coordinator in football. Willmar's game Tuesday at Rocori was rescheduled for May 15.
Todd Herman, a two-time All-Area boys basketball selection from New London-Spicer, signed a letter of intent with St. Cloud State University Tuesday, the school reported. Herman, a 6-foot-4 wing who was second in the area with a 21.4 points-per-game average, led the Wildcats to the state Class AA tournament in March. He also averaged 8.6 rebounds and was selected to all-West Central Conference teams three times.
WILLMAR -- Ridgewater captured the top seed for this weekend's Region 13 tournament after sweeping a doubleheader from Minnesota West Tuesday. Laura Suter hurled a three-hit shutout in the Lady Warriors' 7-0 win in the opener and Ridgewater won the second game 8-1 behind Angie Flaten's six-hitter. Rochester and Minnesota West open the region tournament Friday at 1 p.m.
PAYNESVILLE -- Minnewaska beat up on Paynesville pitching, handing the defending Class AA champs an 8-2 loss Tuesday. The Bulldogs (8-2, 10-2) took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, then struggled, allowing 10 hits. Cass Kreitlow pitched a three-hitter, striking out 10 without walking a batter. Jon Hoffmann hit a two-run home run in second inning, giving the Lakers (5-4, 9-4) a 3-2 lead. Aaron Kessler went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Lakers.
MORRIS -- Eddie Massee gave up only four hits in a complete-game performance to help Lac qui Parle Valley edge Morris 4-2 Tuesday night and clinch at least a share of the West Central South Conference title. The win gives LQPV a 9-0 record in the loop and 12-2 overall. BOLD or Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (4-3) would have to win their final five conference games and LQPV lose its final three in order to grab a share of the crown. Massee allowed both earned runs in the fifth.
