EDEN PRAIRIE -- Four Willmar High School basketball teams competed on Saturday and Sunday at the Special Olympics Spring Games held at Eden Prairie High School. About 1,200 athletes participated. It was the final year of competition for Kenny Kight, Robert Hinseth and Bobby Nelson. Eric Wankerl earned his Willmar varsity letter and Danny Kulset earned his letter from New London-Spicer. An awards banquet was held for the team Monday night at the Elk Club lodge.

In conjunction with the University of Minnesota Gophers football mini clinics, Benson will host the 1st annual High School Coaches Clinic on Wednesday. The clinic will be held from 6-9:15 p.m. at DS Lageson's (part of the Country Inn and Suites) in Benson. The cost is $15 per coach or $50 for an entire grades 7-12 staff. New London-Spicer Community Education and Youth Services is taking registrations for the Tuesday Night Men's Slow-Pitch Softball League in Spicer. Teams must register and pay the $275 fee by May 18. The cost will be $300 after that. Games begin on May 22. The first 12 teams to register will be accepted. The Central Lakes Conference boys golf meet postponed earlier this spring and rescheduled for today has been cancelled because one of the teams has a conflict. The meet will not be made up and the conference will go with nine meets instead of 10 this season.
The Willmar Cardinal baseball and softball teams will both be playing in tournaments this weekend. The baseball team plays at Marshall in a four-team tournament. The Cardinals open against West Fargo, N.D. at 12:15 p.m. Marshall plays Lac qui Parle Valley at 10 a.m. and the losers meet at approximately 2:30 p.m. and the winners to follow. The Cardinals softball team plays a round-robin format in Hutchinson beginning at 10 a.m. against Dassel-Cokato.

WILLMAR -- Ashley Lensing of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa was the only West Central Tribune area athlete, not including Willmar, to win two events at the Willmar Optimist Relays Thursday. Lensing won the girls 100-meter hurdles in 17.32 seconds, then cleared 8 feet to win the pole vault. Kolt Therkilsen of New London-Spicer was the only other area athlete to win, leaping, 38-4.25 in the triple jump.
