The good thing about having an unusually dry year is the mosquito population is down considerably from a normal year. The bad thing is ticks and chiggers are doing unusually well. The results are the same. We end up itching. Habits of the parasitic chiggers and ticks are very similar. They sit on vegetation until some unsuspecting warm blooded animal passes by.
Events/competitions Youth Shoot -- Saturday, Aug. 5 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Willmar Trap Club, located on County Road 116 west of the new Municipal Airport. The youth shoot is for children ages 18 and under. There is no admission fee and ammunition will be provided. For more information, call 320-894-6087. Weekly/monthly, etc. Renville Rangers Shooting Club -- Wednesday and Thursday 6:30-9 p.m., Sunday 1:30-4 p.m. Trap and skeet leagues are also forming for summer. The range is located 1½ miles north of Bird Island on County Road 5. Public is welcome.
MONTEVIDEO -- Montevideo clinched its first-ever berth in the state Division II Legion tournament with a 5-4 win over Glenwood Friday in the District 7, Division II playoffs. Montevideo (18-4) will play Fairfax at noon in the district title series. Montevideo would have to win twice to capture the crown. Both teams have qualified for the state tournament, which will be held Aug.
Due to a leaky sprinkler system on New London-Spicer's field in Spicer, today's elimination game in the Cornbelt North amateur baseball playoffs between the Twins and Paynesville has been moved to Regal. The game is still set to start at 1:30 p.m. The winner gets a spot in the Region 15C playoffs and will face Norway Lake-Sunburg on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Sunburg for the league title with a second game to follow if necessary. Also in the Cornbelt on Sunday, Raymond hosts Willmar at 1:30 p.m. for the South title. A second game would follow if Willmar wins.
New London native Aaron Barber shot a 69 Friday, one stroke better than Thursday, but one stroke more than the cut line at the Nationwide Tour's Wichita Open in Wichita, Kan. Barber finished with three birdies and one bogey and was three-under-par overall.
WILLMAR -- The Willmar I VFW baseball team won its 20th straight game with a 10-0, five-inning win over Madison in the District 5 Tournament Friday at Bill Taunton Stadium. David Anderson pitched a four-hit shutout and let only one Madison batter reach third base. Madison's only real scoring chance came in the first inning with runners at second and third with two out, but Anderson picked up his second strikeout of the inning to get out of the jam.
WILLMAR -- Shane Sabraski of Rice won both the Wissota Modified and Midwest Modified features at KRA Speedway Thursday. Sabraski beat Ryan Canon of Clearwater in the Wissota race and Brandon Nelson of New London in the Midwest race. Zach Schultz of Grove City also pulled double duty, placing in the top five of both the Midwest Mods and Super Stock.
