EAGLE LAKE -- Every spring, pairs of bobolinks make a roughly 6,000 mile trip from the southern tip of South America to nest on the grassland that Wayne and Shirley Block put into the Conservation Reserve Program about 1 ½ miles upstream of Eagle Lake in 1987.
WILLMAR – The District 7 American Legion Riders Post No. 59, Montevideo, legacy fund ride, was held Saturday, July 21. Leaving from Montevideo, the ride made stops in Spicer, Paynesville and Litchfield, as well as the American Legion in Willmar, where American Legion rider Kurt Dahl and Darrell Modica, a Post 167 Honor Guard member, were caught swapping cycling stories as 82 motorcycles “stand at ease” in the Willmar Legion parking lot.
WILLMAR -- The 25th annual Kandiyohi County Relay for Life will take place today from 5 to 10:30 p.m. at Hodapp Field, next to Kennedy Elementary School in Willmar. The change of venue is due to all the rain and wet conditions at the original site. Events will start at 5 p.m. with food, games, bouncy houses and other fun acitivites. The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. with recognition of 25 years of Relay volunteers and teams. The Luminaria Ceremony and Survior Lap will begin at 8:15 p.m. with the closing ceremony at 10:30 p.m.
STONY RUN TOWNSHIP – A 7-year old boy from Weslaco, Texas was seriously injured in a rear-end accident in a construction zone Wednesday morning on U.S. Highway 212 between Montevideo and Granite Falls. Jared David Trevino suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, the Minnesota State Patrol reported.
LITCHFIELD – A 14-year-old girl was airlifted to the Hennepin County Medical Center for critical injuries she suffered in an ATV accident south of Grove City in Meeker County at 9:21 p.m. Friday. Sabrina Miller, 14, of Glendale, Arizona, and Tyler Schindewolf, 9, of Cosmos, were injured when their ATV overturned on a driveway on the 54000 block of County State Aid Highway 23 in Acton Township, according to the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office.
If the past few weeks are any indication, our New London EMTs and firefighters have a busy summer in front of them. With the construction on Highway 71, the traffic on Highway 9 has increased exponentially. That's great for our prospering downtown but not so great for drivers who must cross busy Highway 23. What can be done to decrease the number of accidents in that area?
Photo by Erica Deschino. Despite morning rains, the Spicer Fourth of July parade attracted hundreds of people along the Lake Avenue parade route. Activites continue all day today in Spicer, concluding with fireworks at dusk over Green Lake.
WILLMAR – The Minnesota Department of Transportation has temporarily closed Highway 14 in Redwood County due to water over the road. The road closure is located about one mile east of Lamberton. Recent rains in southern Minnesota have caused flooding and MnDOT advises motorists to drive with caution because vehicles can be swept away in only several inches of moving water.
WILLMAR – Two roads in southern Minnesota are now open to traffic after being closed earlier today because of rain-induced flooding, but two others roads remain closed because of high water. A no travel advisory remains in effect for Murray County because of flooded roads and motorists are advised to drive with caution in Redwood County and Lyon County because roads remain underwater.
