WILLMAR – The Sears Hometown location in the Kandi Mall is closing. Signs at the store, as well as on the store’s website are announcing the store liquidation sale.

When Sears Holdings, the owner of Sears Department stores and Kmart, filed for bankruptcy in October, it seemed the Hometown stores, which are independently owned, would not be impacted. Sears Hometown and Outlets became its own company several years ago, seperating from Sears Holdings.

Joel Garza, the owner of Willmar’s Hometown Store, said in October, he would remain open.

Garza has not been available to comment on the closure of the Willmar store, or why it is closing now.

The closing is the latest blow to the Kandi Mall, which has lost several tenants in the last few years, including Herbergers and Book World, along with the still empty space once filled by Kmart.
