WILLMAR — OfficeMax, the office supply store located at 1901 S. First St. in Willmar, is closing, with its last day scheduled for May 15.
The closing sale began March 18.
"Office Depot continues to optimize its retail footprint," said Shera Bishop, senior communications specialist for Office Depot, which owns OfficeMax. This is why the company has decided to close the Willmar location.
Bishop added customers can continue to purchase their office supplies, services and solutions online.

According to a news release on the company's fourth quarter 2020 results, 153 stores were closed in 2020, 90 in the fourth quarter alone. Office Depot at the time had 1,154 stores still open. The company has been focusing more on a business-to-business plan, along with digital initiatives.
Back in May 2020, the company had announced in a report to the Securities and Exchange Commission that it was planning to close many stores and lay off approximately 13,100 employees by 2023.
Office Depot and OfficeMax merged in late 2013. The company just recently rejected an acquisition bid from Staples, another office supply retailer. Office Depot said it told Staples that there could be opportunity to combine the two companies' retail businesses.
