The West Central Tribune won three awards in the Minnesota Newspaper Association's Better Newspaper Contest.
The awards were presented Thursday during the association's annual convention in Bloomington.
The Tribune won first place in the special sections category for all dailies with its multi-section "Living Heroes in History" project published in March 2009. The judge wrote "Wow. Great section covers and interesting graphics throughout. Wonderful stories of local service people and use of 'in their own words ... ' was very relevant."
The "Living Heroes in History" project included stories by Anne Polta, Tom Cherveny, Garret Felder, Carolyn Lange, David Little, Gretchen Schlosser and Linda Vanderwerf. The project's photography was by Gary Miller and Ron Adams. The project was directed by Sharon Bomstad, copy edited by Susan Lunneborg and Dan Burdett; and section covers designed by Bomstad and Angela Schwanke.
The Tribune won first place for use of photography as a whole for daily newspapers over 10,000. Burdett, Lunneborg, Sharon, Miller, Scott Thoma and T.J. Bartelt designed the newspaper's photography usage.

The Tribune also won second place for editorial page as a whole for dailies over 10,000. The judge commented "Clean design, local letters to the editor ... make this an interesting page."
