One of the most basic and useful tools at a reporter's desk is a phone book.
Or at least it used to be.
More people are giving up their land lines for cell-only service, and so far there aren't phone books with cell phone numbers.
That's made it more challenging to find folks and it's forced reporters to use others methods, like doing a Google search or hunting for names on Facebook or Twitter and sending electronic messages with a plea to "call me."
Surprisingly, it's not just the under 50 crowd that carries their home phones in purses and pockets. Many seniors are also cutting expenses by cutting off their landlines in exchange for cell phones.

But not every senior has a Twitter account and most have better things to do than maintain a Facebook account.
