EUREKA, Calif. -- Ervin V. Gunderson, 87, of Eureka, Calif., formerly of Willmar, died Oct. 3.

Services were held in Eureka.

He was born April 1, 1921, to Elmer and Verna (Patterson) Gunderson. He grew up and attended school in Willmar.

He served as a surgical tech during World War II in France, Germany, central Europe, Tunisia and Italy and received the Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Service Arrowhead. He owned and operated a Flying A service station for 27 years in Eureka and then worked for Tetrault for 10 years during his retirement.

He was past commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Eureka and the past governor of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 636 in Eureka.

He is survived by his wife, Evangeline; children: David Gunderson, Karen Mutz and Cindy Andrews, all of California; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister: June (and Curtis) Jacobsen of Willmar.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.
