Oliver B. Benson March 3, 1924 - July 30, 2009

STONY RUN TOWNSHIP -- Oliver B. Benson, 85, of Montevideo died Thursday at Lutheran Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo.

The service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bergen Lutheran Church in Stony Run Township, Yellow Medicine County. Burial will be at Bergen Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Lynner Funeral Home of Clarkfield is handling arrangements.

He was born March 3, 1924, in Stony Run Township to Thomas and Bertina (Eide) Benson. He attended School District 4 from first to eighth grade and graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1942. He farmed until 1945 when he joined the U.S. Army. He served in the military from 1945 to 1946. He spent much time in the Philippines. While in the service, he had several duties including chaplain assistant. Following military duty, he returned home and farmed from 1947 to 1986 in the Boyd area. From 1986 to 1996, he worked in the spring and fall for a farmer and from 1994 to 2003 he worked at the Milan beet pile.

He moved to Montevideo in 1989 with his sister, Minnie. He was a volunteer at Luther Haven and worked in the chapel and sang. He was a member of the Montevideo Fiesta Barbershop Chorus and the West Central Connection of Willmar for eight years. He was a member of Bergen Lutheran Church and sang in the choir.

He sold his home in Montevideo in 2005 and moved to Brookside Manor Apartments and was a resident of Luther Haven at the time of his death.

He is survived by siblings: Ruth Laemmie, Minnie Johnson, Linda (and Hilman) Korstad and Thoralf (and Myrtle) Benson.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
