Willmar Municipal Utilities may be asked to help with emergency power generation and conservation measures this summer as the Midcontinent Independent System Operator expects energy shortages due to rising heat waves.
The Willmar Municipal Utilities Commission heard an interim water rate report at its May 23 meeting that projected a potential rate increase of 25% starting in 2023. No decisions will be made before July, but the action may be needed in order to replenish cash reserves.
Members of the Willmar Municipal Utilities Commission took one last tour of the power plant to analyze if there is anything left worth keeping. Many items with historic value have been salvaged ahead of the planned demolition of the plant next year.

An overnight power outage in Willmar on Feb. 28 was caused by equipment failure at the Willmar Substation. Willmar Municipal Utilities crews were able to get power back up within 40 minutes. Willmar Municipal Utilities is also asking that customers not call 911 to report an outage, but instead call the utilities.
