MONTICELLO — Willmar had speed to its advantage. And that quickness paid dividends early as the Cardinals jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first half en route to a 5-3 season-opening win over Monticello in the opening round of the four-team Monticello tournament on Thursday.

“We took it to them at the beginning,” said Willmar head coach Jeff Winter. “Towards the end of the game it got a little physical … and they were able to punch it in and make it close. But we were able to run away from it at the start.

“We were faster, we used some through-balls to pass through their defenders and get to our strikers.”

Kelvin Gomez Padilla found the back of the net early with goals in the fifth and 14th minute. He also had a pair of assists in the first half on goals by Jario Martinez Coto in the 20th and 33rd minutes.

The Cardinals’ final goal came in the 64th minute via Anthony Reyes, who also had an assist in the first half. Walid Mahamed and Mohamedfatah Mohamed also had assists in the victory.

Goalkeeper Leighton Winter came up with eight stops to secure the Willmar win.

The Cardinals will play Southwest Christian in the tournament championship at 6 p.m. Friday.
