DANUBE — Renville County West football celebrated homecoming with a 28-6 victory over Cedar Mountain on Thursday.
The Jaguars endured a close first half, going into halftime leading the Cougars 8-6 but went on to outscore their opponents 20-0 in the second half.
“That first half was tight and give (Cedar Mountain) credit they have good athletes and they made plays,” RCW coach Ryan Hebrink said. “It slowed us down and we had to slow things down at halftime and we executed it really well.”
Hebrink credited the Jaguars’ defense for shutting out the Cougars after allowing one touchdown in the first quarter.
“Overall our defense played really well,” he said. “Our defense was disciplined; they came out there ready to play hard and give their best effort and they played well.”
Players and fans seemed to enjoy the calm Thursday night with 70-degree weather, no wind, no rain, and very few, if any, mosquitoes.
The Jaguars got on the board first with a two-yard touchdown run by quarterback A.J. Gasca followed by successfully completing the two-point conversion with a run by fullback Jasen Jansen.
In the closing minutes of the first quarter, Cedar Mountain senior Caden Kleinschmidt scored a 23-yard touchdown run, but the team failed on the two-point attempt to cut the deficit to 8-6.
The second quarter was a defensive battle with neither team able to reach the end zone.
Hebrink said the adjustments discussed at halftime helped the Jaguars in the second half.
“We knew our guys had that winning effort,” he said. “(Cedar Mountain) didn’t do anything shocking in that first half. We just made a few defensive setbacks but we picked up on those and it showed in the rest of the game.”
Jansen was first to reach the end zone in the second half for the Jaguars with a 20-yard run.
RCW added another touchdown with a 15-yard connection between Isaac Haen and Gasca. Gasca scored the final touchdown of the game with a 17-yard dash.
RCW (4-2) competes at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at Nicollet.
