WILLMAR - The Bach Society of Minnesota will open its 2018-19 concert season with concerts this weekend, and it will include workshops and a concert in Willmar Saturday.

The "Bach and The Forbidden City" concert will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Brau Performing Arts Center at Willmar Senior High School. Tickets are available online at www.bachsocietymn.org and at the door. Cost is $15 for adults and $5 for students.

Singers and musicians may participate in the Bach Society's workshop beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. Participants will work with the society's artists and prepare two works to be included in the concert. Registration fee is $20 and includes lunch and a concert ticket.

The concert will feature a chinese guitar called a Pipa. Pipa master Gao Hong will join the society to explore counterpoints between Classical Chinese music with European Baroque.

A crossover program will feature the Pipa taking the solo part in Vivaldi's "Concerto for Guitar," along with works by Bach. Other pieces on the program will explore the royal courts of Asia and Europe with themes of palace intrigue and political strife.
