Bus trips by community education and other nonprofit groups to arts-related events are listed below according to the date of the event. Price must be included.
Swift County Historical Society: Bus trip June 15 to New Ulm retracing the route taken by the Benson Automobile Club in 1912. New Ulm guide will board the bus for a two-hour tour of the city including German Park, Hermann Monument, the cathedral and other sites before the noon Glockenspiel performance. The afternoon will include a tour and tasting at the Schell Brewery, stops at Turner Hall's Ratskeller and Governor Lind's home. Bus leaves museum at 7:30 a.m. and returns around 7 p.m. Cost is $45 per person; noon lunch is on your own. Purchase ticket at museum by June 1; 320-843-4467.
Book lecture/signing
Mike Lynch will speak at 1 p.m. June 5 at the Olivia Public Library. The WCCO meteorologist will sign his books.
Jim Johnson will speak at 7 p.m. June 17 at the Kandiyohi County Historical Society about his book "Dummy Hanson," the story of Esten Hanson, the prelingual deaf son of Norwegian immigrants who was born in 1877 in Swift County. He was called "Dummy" Hanson by local newspapers and known to baseball fans by that name. He was considered one of the best amateur pitchers in Minnesota in the early 1900s. He pitched for (and was paid by) teams in Eden Valley, Kerkhoven and Battle Lake and also caught for the New London team. There will be an ASL interpreter at the talk.
