LOS ANGELES - Northern Minnesota could be the setting of a crime-drama television series based on a trilogy of books by Norwegian novelist Vidar Sundstol.

The entertainment newspaper Variety reports that "'Minnesota' would revolve around the murder of a Norwegian tourist who turns up on the shores of Lake Superior in a case with links to a crime dating back 100 years."

Slingshot Global Media has made a deal with Nordic producer Tomas Backstrom to bring the Sundstol books to the small screen.

Sundstol and his wife lived on the North Shore of Lake Superior for two years, providing him with background for what is known as the "Minnesota Trilogy" -- "The Land of Dreams," "Only the Dead" and "The Ravens."

Author Brian Freeman describes "The Land of Dreams" as: "Scandinavian noir meets Minnesota noir. ... Sundstol weaves a rich sense of Northland history and heritage into his crime novel. His deep knowledge of, and love for, the Lake Superior region comes through on every page."

"The Land of Dreams" won the Riverton Prize for best Norwegian crime novel of the year.

The University of Minnesota Press published the three books.
