LITCHFIELD -- The third time was the charm for Koronis Regional Park, which recently received a $150,000 grant to improve safety and recreational facilities.
The grant will provide partial funding for the $229,000 project, according to Meeker County Administrator Paul Virnig.
The money will be used to build a storm shelter, three camper cabins and playground equipment. An emergency siren will also be installed.
The Meeker County and Stearns County boards approved the grant this week. Stearns County co-owns the park with Meeker County.
The counties will evenly split the $79,000 matching funds required to obtain the grant.

Virnig said the amenities will make the park, located on Lake Koronis near Paynesville, even more attractive. Construction is expected to take place this spring.
This is the third time the grant from the state Department of Natural Resources had been sought for the park.
In other action:
- Commissioners agreed to award bids for a project on state Highway 27 at the same time that neighboring Wright County is expected to award bids for a much larger project. By coordinating the timing, Meeker County is hoping to attract favorable bids from the contractors who will also bid on the Wright County project.
- The county will be seeking federal stimulus funding for two highway projects, including a bridge replacement by Lake Koronis estimated at $150,000, and improvements to state Highway 28, estimated at $900,000.
- Commissioners also discussed potential costs associated with new federal requirements to make sure road signs have uniform reflectivity. There are 10,000 signs in the county, not including cities.
