GIRLS OUTLOOK

  • Plenty of experience is back. The girls lost only senior Brin Hanson to graduation but are still relatively young with only three seniors on roster.
  • One of those, Vannessa Engelmann, won the 12th-grade race at the conference jamboree on Thursday. Strength of team in terms of experience is in the sophomore class.
  • Summer mileage improved over 2006 but still short of what it takes to rank among elite teams, according to co-head coach Jerry Popp.
  • Conference champion Brainerd was only 20 points ahead of second-place Willmar in the conference meet last year.
  • Varsity leaders expected to come from this group: Engelmann, Jayne Cole, Jackie Johnson, Danielle Erickson, Erin Sheehan, Britta Pederson, Ashley Bach, Ashley Wigton with Emily Ellingson and newcomer Dominique Hudson runners to watch.

BOYS OUTLOOK

  • Two-time state champions in Class AA lost five of top seven. The holdovers, senior Andrew Nicklawsky, won the senior race at the jamboree while Mahad Hassan claimed first in the race pitting all the 11th-grade boys in the 10-team loop. The Cardinals made it a sweep in the top three classes when Mohamed Hussein won the 10th-grade race.
  • Conference rival Brainerd is ranked in the pre-season Class AA top five ahead of Willmar. The Warriors have their top five harriers returning.
  • Top prospects to fill the spots created by graduation are David Anderson, Zach Coquyt, Ryan Larsen and Abshir Ahmed. Coquyt finished 10th in the CLC meet last year where the Cardinals posted a perfect score of 15.
  • Two former members of both state championship teams, Abdi Awale and Mustufa Yusuf, are attending Minnesota State Mankato where they have joined the cross-country team and will also run track.
