22 area matmen win on first day at state

ST. PAUL -- Twenty two of the Tribune area's 41 wrestlers opened the state individual wrestling tournament with a win on Wednesday at Xcel Energy Center.

Two of three defending state champions from the area were victorious in the first round; Ryan Thompson of Benson at 152 pounds and Joel Bauman of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at 189 pounds, both in Class A. However, Ryan Swenson of Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley was pinned in his opening match at 135 pounds in Class AA.

Willmar's Adam Fagerstrom, the lone senior on the team, earned the 100th win of his career, getting a 4-2 decision at 135 pounds in Class AAA.

The individual portion of the tournament continues today. Those wrestlers losing their first match on Wednesday will be eliminated if the wrestler that beat them loses his quarterfinal match.

In Class A, 16 of the 29 area wrestlers advanced. In Class AA, five of the eight won opening matches. And in Class AAA, Fagerstrom was the only one of four Willmar wrestlers to start off with a win. Alex Johannes at 119 pounds, Seth Pollock at 125 and Nathanial Swoyer at 171 are all hoping to continue in the consolation round today.

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg had three wrestlers each win matches in the first round in Class A. ACGC's Matt Lee at 125 pounds, Larry Bomstad at 130 and Dylan Nelson at heavyweight all won. Kurt Timmons at 103, Klinton VanHeuveln at 130 and Bauman for KMS were victorious.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (Cole Tensen at 145 and Travis Winter at 160), BOLD (Jacob Revier at 130 and Dusty Caspers at heavyweight), Benson (Thompson and Brady Wersinger at 160), Minnewaska (Cam Schafer at 140 and Brandon Manderschied at 215) and Paynesville (Matt Doom at 160 and Andrew Moser at 189) each saw two of its wrestlers triumph in opening matches in Class A.

Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley (John Weeding at 103 pounds and Jake Bothun at 145) and New London-Spicer (Shawn Hatlestad at 140 and John Nething at 160) each had two Class AA wrestlers advance. Litchfield (Kody Kalkbrenner at 189) had the other opening win in Class AA.
