GRANITE FALLS - Curtis David Quale, 70, of Granite Falls, must serve a minimum of nine years in prison for the brutal stabbing last summer of his 47-year-old girlfriend.
District Judge Paul Nelson sentenced Quale to 162 months for the first degree, attempted murder, domestic abuse conviction during a court appearance in Granite Falls on Tuesday afternoon.
The judge ordered Quale to serve a minimum of two-thirds of that time in prison, and allowed him to serve the remaining 54 months on supervised release provided he has no disciplinary problems in prison. He granted credit for the 194 days Quale has served in jail since his arrest.
The judge also ordered Quale to make restitution of $6,480 in lost wages to the victim, Michelle Young, now 48, and over $36,000 to Minnesota U-Care for her medical expenses. Cash totaling $700 taken during his arrest must be applied towards her lost wages.
Quale had pleaded guilty on Nov. 4 to stabbing Young multiple times sometime during the night of July 15-16 in their Granite Falls home. He called 911 after waking up the next morning and saw her lying on a hallway floor.
