WILLMAR — The Kandiyohi Power Cooperative is asking people to conserve electricity and cut back energy use until 10 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the organization.

The operator of the electric transmission system in the region issued a maximum generation emergency event, and local utility officials made all other efforts to reduce electricity demand or to increase supply, according to the news release.

Energy saving suggestions include:

  • Postponing use of appliances
  • Turning off nonessential lights or electrical equipment
  • Keeping shades pulled and doors and windows closed
  • Using a microwave oven instead of a conventional electric over or gas stove
  • Setting the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher
  • Supplementing air-conditioner use with ceiling fans and other fans
  • Take shorter showers
