WILLMAR —A 68-year-old woman from Backus was the victim in the accidental shooting at Willmar's Super 8 motel Saturday night.
The woman was shot in the leg after a bullet came through the wall of her motel room. She was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar with non-life threatening injuries, the Willmar Police Department said in a news release.
A 34-year-old man of Sheldon, Iowa, was the shooter, according to the Police Department. He has been cooperating with the investigation and will be charged. The West Central Tribune normally does not name suspects until they have been formally charged.
The Police Department, along with Willmar Ambulance, was called at around 10:05 p.m. Saturday to the motel located at the 2600 block of 1st Street South, for a report of a female with a gunshot wound.
According to the police, the suspect had a negligent discharge of a small-caliber handgun at the Super 8. The bullet from the gun traveled through the wall and into the adjacent room, where the woman was staying.
