Couple rescued after ATV breaks through ice heave on Kandiyohi County lake

NEW LONDON – Two people escaped injury Tuesday afternoon when a four-wheeler and fish house broke through ice on West Norway Lake, in northern Kandiyohi County.

According to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Department, the incident happened around 3:24 p.m. when  the individuals were attempting to transport a fish house over an ice heave when the ATV broke through the ice.

The individuals, who were not identified by law enforcement, remained on the four-wheeler and were able to remain dry.

They were assisted to safety by fire department personnel wearing cold-water rescue suits.

The four-wheeler did not completely sink and was able to be removed from the ice heave.

The sheriff’s department was assisted by the Lake Area Rural Responders, Sunburg Ambulance Service, Sunburg Fire Department, New London Fire Department, Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Greg Stehn warns people to be cautious when traveling on frozen lakes because of inconsistencies in thickness of ice and the potential danger of ice heaves.
