Five-year-old drowns at falls in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- A 5-year-old girl visiting the falls in a park near downtown Sioux Falls drowned in the river there, authorities said Monday.

The victim was Maggie Joe Zaiger of Audubon, Iowa, who was visiting the tourist attraction and the namesake of the city on Sunday with her family about noon, said authorities.

She was trying to reach out to touch the foam near a pedestrian bridge when she fell in the water.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to the scene with two rescue swimmers breaking the ice and diving into the water where she was last seen.

The girl was found unresponsive and pulseless by the rescue swimmers shortly after they arrived on the scene. She was taken to paramedics at the scene, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and she was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, said a statement from Sioux Falls Fire Rescue. Crews were on the scene in four minutes after receiving a 911 call and had the girl pulled from the water nine minutes after arriving.

Authorities encourage people not to dive into the sometimes raging and fast-flowing waters at the falls. In March of 2013 two people died while trying to save a boy who also fell into the water at the park.
