LAKE LILLIAN – A 49-year-old man was rescued this morning after the ATV he was riding plunged through the ice on the south side of Big Kandiyohi Lake.
The victim was identified as William H. Wurtz, of Hanska, which is located in Brown County.
The incident was reported at 7:19 a.m. when the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Department received a call that an individual had gone through the ice about 200 yards from shore in the 7200 block of 147th Avenue Southeast, near Lake Lillian.
Members of the Blomkest Fire Department were the first to arrive on the scene. Crew members, who were wearing cold water rescue suits, were able to get Wurtz out of the water, according to a news release from Kandiyohi County Sheriff Dan Hartog.
He was transported to shore by sled and emergency personnel from the Lake Lillian Ambulance, Willmar Ambulance and Blomkest Fire Department.
The Blomkest First Responders provided care to Wurtz, who was taken by Life Link helicopter to the St. Cloud Hospital.
Hartog said people need to use caution when going onto ice-covered lakes and to keep in mind ice thickness can vary from location to location.
