WILLMAR — The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office released the names Monday morning of two individuals injured when their sailboat capsized on Big Kandiyohi Lake during a weekend thunderstorm.

They were identified as James Lund and Duane Smith, both of Franklin.

According to a news release this weekend from the Sheriff's Office, county dispatch received a call at approximately 1:23 a.m. Sunday about a possible overturned sailboat. The two men had been sleeping on the boat, which had been anchored out from the island on the lake. Due to the winds from a thunderstorm moving through, the sailboat overturned and both men entered the water from underneath the boat.

Both were able to swim to shore, about a mile away. One of them was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar for treatment of injuries.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad, Willmar Ambulance, Lake Lillian Fire and Ambulance and Blomkest Fire Department.
