OLIVIA — Two motorists escaped injury in a two-vehicle accident Thursday night that damaged an electrical power box and caused a power outage to some residences north of the community of Renville.
The Renville County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash occurred shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday near the intersection County Road 6 and 880th Avenue about five miles north of Renville in Crooks Township.
The preliminary crash investigation revealed that a 2003 Dodge Ram driven by 69-year-old Gerald Erstad, of Worthington, and a 1973 Chevrolet grain truck driven by 40-year-old Nathan Sunvold, of Renville, were traveling northbound on Renville County Road 6.
Erstad attempted to pass Sunvold as Sunvold was attempting to make a left-hand turn onto 880th Avenue. Sunvold’s vehicle collided with Erstad’s, and both vehicles entered the drainage ditch just north of the intersection. The grain truck was not loaded at the time of the incident. Both drivers were assessed on scene by the Renville Ambulance Service, and released without injury.
As a result of the accident, a power box was damaged, causing power outages to residents in the area of the crash. Renville-Sibley Co-op Power was contacted to ensure the scene was safe, and to restore power to the area.
The Renville County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Renville Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Renville Ambulance Service, and Renville-Sibley Co-Op Power.
The incident remains under investigation.
