LITCHFIELD — A rural Dassel man suffered a gunshot wound to his leg Friday afternoon in Kingston Township due to an accidental discharge of his weapon.

According to a Meeker County Sheriff's Office news release, a report was received at 2:40 p.m. Friday of an individual with a gunshot wound from a hunting accident in the 72000 block of Meeker County Road 27.

Michael Hendrickson, 38, was hunting in Kingston Township in Meeker County and was climbing into his deer stand when his weapon was accidentally discharged.

Meeker County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and found him with a gunshot wound to his leg and learned that a tourniquet had been applied to control the bleeding. Hendrickson was then airlifted from the scene to St. Cloud Hospital with serious injuries.

Meeker County Sheriff Brian Cruze asks all hunters to remember to practice safe firearms handling, especially when climbing into and out of elevated deer stands.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Dassel Rescue, Mayo Ambulance and Life LInk III also responded to the accident.
