ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Minnesota's AFL-CIO has thrown its support behind Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Dayton after the group sat out the primary.

The union's board cited Dayton's background as economic development commissioner and state auditor and said he was the candidate with the best economic plan.

The AFL-CIO, with more than 1,000 affiliate unions representing more than 300,000 members, decided not to endorse during the Democrats' contested primary.

Other labor groups split between Dayton and House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher.
