STARBUCK -- Alder Stanford Schlief, 89, of Starbuck died Monday at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home.

The service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Hoplin Funeral Home in Glenwood. Burial will be at the West Lake Amelia Cemetery near Villard.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service on Friday.

He was born Jan. 30, 1916, in Rockford to Henry and Emma (Vergin) Schlief. He grew up near Sedan, where he attended school and helped on the family farm. He farmed near Grove Lake for a few years, then became a merchant marine during World War II.

He married Violet Wegener on Jan. 26, 1944, in Omaha, Neb. He was honorably discharged and they returned to Minnesota. He did some carpentry work in South Haven, then purchased a Standard gas station in Paynesville. They sold the gas station and purchased their farm near Glenwood in 1954. They retired in 1991.

He is survived by his wife; children: Diana of Starbuck, Warren of Grass Valley, Calif., Douglas (and Evelyn) of Glenwood; seven grandchildren; and one brother: Ervin (and Evalea) of Glenwood.

He was preceded in death by his daughter and son-in-law: Sharon and Phil; three sisters and two brothers.
