PAYNESVILLE -- Alphonse Henry "Al" Schaefer, 84, of Paynesville died Wednesday at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Burial will be at the St. Louis Parish Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville, with prayers by the St. Louis Knights of Columbus Council 3820, St. Louis Catholic Aid Association and Daughters of Isabella at 5 p.m. and parish prayers at 7 p.m., and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Memorials are preferred.

He was born June 25, 1922, in St. Martin to Henry and Mary Schaefer.

He married Rosalia Braegelmann on April 30, 1946, in Richmond. They farmed near Regal until retiring in 1986. They moved to Paynesville and he worked part-time at Ferrell Gas Company. He also worked as an insurance agent and director of Paynesville Mutual Insurance Company for 35 years.

He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Crosier Apostolate and Catholic Aid, for which he was auditor.

He is survived by his wife; children: Shirley (and Ken) Lieser of Paynesville, John (and Mary Jane) of Willmar, Mary (and Don) Heinen of Roscoe, Barb (and Rob) Brinkman of St. Joseph, Tim (and Cindy) of Paynesville, Terry (and Carol) of Paynesville; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and two siblings: Ed of St. Martin and Alma Dirks of St. Cloud.

He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
