Amateur Baseball: Bird Island turns back Milroy, 2-1

MILROY -- Brad Gass allowed just three hits in seven innings and Wade Dollerschell drove in two runs to lead Bird Island to a 2-1 win over Milroy in non-league amateur baseball action Wednesday.

Gass, in his first start of the season, allowed one run in the eighth, while striking out four and walking two in a pitcher's duel with Milroy's Ryan Rohlik.

Rohlik gave up nine hits, but didn't walk a batter and struck out eight for the Yankees (16-6).

Dollerschell smacked run-scoring singles in the first and the eighth innings for the Islanders (13-7). Bird Island also had runners at second and third in the sixth, but didn't cash in.

Mark Neubauer and Kyle Bruns also had two hits each for the Islanders.

Gregg Helin pitched two innings for the save, recording three strikeouts.

Cold Spring applied a lot of pressure early, then held on to beat Raymond.

In the first three innings, Cold Spring scored four runs off Raymond starting pitcher Nate Hebrink and blazed the base paths, stealing four bases.

Raymond (20-8) then cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth inning on a Jed Nelson RBI ground out and Mike Kragenbring's run-scoring single.

But Cold Spring answered with two in the bottom of the frame to make it 6-3.

Kragenbring, who finished with three hits, drove in two more with a double in the ninth and the Rockets had a chance to tie the game, but Kyle Knott's long fly ball was tracked down in left-center field.

Knott finished with two hits for the Rockets. Hebrink took the loss. Travis Epema allowed one run in four innings of relief. He walked none and struck out three.
