SARTELL - Kevin Soine tossed a complete-game shutout and struck out five as the New London-Spicer Twins defeated the St. Stephen Steves 3-0 on Friday in the first round of the Omann Insurance Invitational.
Soine also singled leading off the third and later scored on Scott Rambow’s double to give NLS a quick 1-0 lead.
St. Stephen countered with pitcher Nick Krippner, who went all six innings and allowed three runs.
Jordan Ackerman had the lone multi-hit performance for New London-Spicer, going 2-for-3. The Twins added two runs in the sixth when Jake Damhof singled in Austin Rambow and Andrew Bangen scored on a wild pitch.
NLS will play the Lastrup/Isanti winner in the semifinals today at 2 or 5 p.m. in St. Stephen. The Twins would then play in either the third-place game or the championship on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Sartell or St. Stephen.
